As part of mmy internship at Wieden+Kennedy Tokyo I will also be contributing to w+k tokyo lab's next DVD/book, Tokyo.Ten, which is due to be released later this year.

The way I see Tokyo is a bit like a board game — it’s a journey and an adventure, and every moment is a throw of dice, a random intersection of possibilities.
For this project I wanted to explore Tokyo by seeing where chance would take me. Many have the impression that Tokyo is all skyscrapers and huge crowds and scrambled crossings. But take step three streets off to the side and you’re in a whole new world. Hidden behind the four-lane roads are the narrow alleys, the overgrown vacant lots, faded posters and rusty signs. The lonely local parks, the laundry hanging from apartment blocks, these are the places tourists will never see. By choosinig my destinations in a completely random method, I would give myself the chance to see tokyo’s B-side.

I allowed my destinations to be decided by the “points” on a die. I developed a system of throwing the die to decide the page number and grid location of ten separate points on a newly acquired pocket map of the city and designated ten points to visit. Then, armed with a sketchbook and several cameras, I went on to document and record each point.

Thank you to everyone who showed up to the private view, to paul and claudia for the tunes, and to the fire brigade who showed up twice on account of some of the balloons escaping and getting trapped in front of the smoke detector setting off the fire alarm about twenty times. The rooms were packed and it was a really big success despite the fact that the evening ended in a hectic evacuation of the premises and a premature conclusion of the show. More photos coming soon on the grassroots website!

most of the photos are from before the crowd showed up. When the alarm went off we had about a hundred people outside the front entrance of the university, balloons with work attached going up all over the place, caught in the trees, drifting up and over elephant and castle. Maybe one special piece of art will find its way to your street?

Wow I've been working six days this week and moving house at the same time so I really haven't had time to put these up but better late than never right... These are photos from the actual private view on the 22nd of june.

ta-da.

Anyway the next entry will be about our beautiful new house... I've moved in with the bangerters in a three-bedroom house in Bethnal green. It's the sweetest little house with our own little garden. They're in switzerland no so I have it all to myself... Kinda cool but also a bit quiet... Since i'm working anyway it doesn't make that much of a difference and my old house is just 10 min up the road with everyone still in it. Oh yea- my new job... I work for a catering company that does big fancy parties and dinners for multinational companies (ford, vogue, elle, debeers, etc etc) and the royal family and really really rich individuals. It's really fun because it's in a different place every time. They do everything from private dinners in the posh end of town to big events like the olympic dinner in athens. Eventually I'll probably get to travel with them... For now mostly I carry stuff, serve food and drinks and clean up... basic waitressing. Pretty cool when they let the staff eat the leftover food though. sweet.

I think this is the coolest thing I've ever been involved in. We made it, we built it, we printed it, we nailed it, we hung it, we pulled an all-nighter in the gallery putting it up (well, some of us did), we taped down the plastic, we laid the turf, we swept it, we made music, we sold drinks, we partied. This is the beastin'-est exhibition in the whole of the Free Range Arts Festival. No questions asked.

I don't have photos yet from the actual private view (which started at 6:00 pm) because I went home to change and forgot my camera BUT they are coming soon. A few hundred people showed up, it was like a real festival with people chilling out on the grass drinking beer and looking through sketchbooks. The moving image bit had rows of couches made of turf and there was work hanging on clotheslines, the shed turned into a bar and we had live bands in the corner. We had a really hard time getting people to leave at 10 but it was a buzzing night. It was really satisfying to see it all come together, bit by bit. Big thanks to everyone who made it happen and everyone who came to see it happen. Love to all! I'm finally on vacation. xxx
